Nigel Calder – Understanding and Troubleshooting Boat Electrical Systems

The number one source of problems on boats large enough to have an electrical system, both power and sail, lies in these electrical systems. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling ‘Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual’ (now in its 4th edition, with over 300,000 copies sold) takes participants through the core design requirements necessary to head off electrical systems problems, and to optimize electrical generating efficiency. There will be an extensive review of key installation issues, many of them commonly overlooked or violated, with a hands-on segment installing cable terminals, which are critical to the reliability of electrical systems. Nigel will delve into step-by-step troubleshooting techniques, including using a multimeter, that will rapidly identify most problems should they arise. Various common electrical faults will be simulated and tracked down. Although the focus is on DC systems, Nigel will look at essential safety issues with respect to AC circuits, and measures to prevent galvanic and stray current corrosion. Not only will you leave class with a far better understanding of your electrical systems and knowing how to fix common problems, but you will also likely save the price of admission by not having to make service calls or swap out perfectly good parts in search of solutions. No previous experience is necessary, although this will be an intense two days for those with zero electrical experience! Basic wire terminal installation tools are required. These will be available for purchase for those who do not have them. The course includes a file with a set of 500 slides which can serve as an essential reference for years to come.

This Advanced Seminar comes with a 2-day pass for the Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show. The seminar ends each day at 4:00 PM to give attendees 2 hours to walk the show floor and visit the docks as well as attend Latitude 38’s party, on Friday, April 17, 2020 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM and the Cruiser’s Party, hosted by Latitudes and Attitudes (previously Cruising Outpost), on Saturday, April 18, 2020 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Chuck Hawley- Chuck is a lifelong sailor, having sailed over 40,000 miles on a variety of power and sail vessels ranging from ultralight 24 footers to the 125 foot catamaran PlayStation. He has sailed across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and has incorporated the lessons learned from those voyages into hundreds of videos and articles on safety and seamanship.

Chuck is a nationally known speaker on marine safety, and served as the chair of the US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee from 2011 to 2018. As Chairman, he oversaw the creation of the Safety Equipment Requirements, and was the primary author of an online Safety at Sea course comprised of 175 videos on 15 topics, and co-authored the Safety at Sea book, which is used in courses nationwide.

Chuck worked for 30 years in the marine industry and held senior positions in marketing and product development. He is currently a marine industry consultant. He lives in Santa Cruz with his wife, Susan, and is the proud father of five daughters and one granddaughter.

John Taussig–Paramedic, USCG 50 Ton Master- Adventure sailor, career paramedic, and Executive Director for Backcountry Medical Guides, John has 20+ years working in EMS as a flight, ground, and ranger paramedic throughout the West. He’s skippered voyages up and down the coast from Alaska to Panama and sailed extensively throughout the Caribbean. John currently splits time between boats in Santa Cruz, CA and Bellingham, WA.

TWO-DAY SEMINAR: Understanding and Troubleshooting Boat Electrical Systems
The number one source of problems on boats large enough to have an electrical system, both power and sail, lies in these electrical systems. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling “Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual” (now in its 4th edition, with over 300,000 copies sold) takes participants through the core design requirements necessary to head off electrical system problems and to optimize electrical generating efficiency. There will be an extensive review of key installation issues, many of them commonly overlooked or violated, with a hands-on segment on installing cable terminals, which are critical to the reliability of electrical systems. Nigel will delve into step-by-step troubleshooting techniques, including using a multimeter, which will rapidly identify most problems should they arise. Various common electrical faults will be simulated and tracked down. Although the focus is on DC systems, Nigel will look at essential safety issues with respect to AC circuits and measures to prevent galvanic and stray current corrosion. Not only will you leave class with a far better understanding of your electrical systems and knowing how to fix common problems, but you will also likely save the price of admission by not having to make service calls or swap out perfectly good parts in search of solutions. No previous experience is necessary, although this will be an intense two days for those with zero electrical experience! Basic wire terminal installation tools are required. These will be available for purchase for those who do not have them. The course includes a file with a set of 500 slides, which can serve as an essential reference for years to come.

Adrien Baudrimont & Vivian Matuk
Adrien is an environmental planner with the San Francisco Estuary Partnership and the Clean Vessel Act Program. This program, funded by the California Division of Boating and Waterways, works with marinas, boaters and other stakeholders to increase awareness of the effects of sewage discharge. In parallel, Adrien manages nature-based shoreline infrastructure projects, including the Oro Loma Experimental Horizontal Levee. Previously, Adrien managed the San Francisco Creek Mouth Assessment Project, as well as the San Francisco Estuary Partnership (SFEP) Small Grant Program before taking an active role in the Boater Outreach and Education Program. Before joining the Partnership, Adrien worked for several cities in Europe as a consultant in urban planning and sustainable development. Adrien has a master‘s degree in geography and a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Paris Sorbonne.

Vivian Matuk is the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) and the California Coastal Commission’s (CCC) Environmental Boating Program Coordinator and Clean Vessel Act Education and Outreach Program Manager. Vivian manages the statewide Boating Clean and Green program led by DBW and implemented in partnership with CCC. The program promotes environmentally-sound boating practices to marine business and boaters. To implement this program, Vivian works with boaters and boating facility operators. Vivian has a bachelor’s degree in biology from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia, South America, and a master’s degree in geography with a concentration in environmental management and natural resource planning from San Francisco State University. Vivian previously worked with the Bay Conservation and Development Commission. She also worked with the National Coffee Research Center in Colombia, developing eco-toxicological tests to measure the impact caused by coffee-processing wastes.

SV Hydroquest sold in Australia, but they were addicted to the lifestyle … On to Boat #2! After outfitting a Jeanneau 43 in Vancouver, they set off cruising again in 2017. SV Kaiquest is currently in (TBA) and Will and Sarah are busy training their newest crew: twin boys.

Jeremy Davis
Jeremy is a yacht operations manager for Weather Routing Inc. (WRI). He has been employed by Weather Routing for the past 20 years, where he provides customized weather forecasts and routing advice to clients worldwide and supervises the forecast center. He is a 2000 graduate of Lyndon State College, VT.

Garry Domnisse
Garry is retired from the United States Coast Guard and a 100 Ton Master near shore. His wife was a nurse and a boat owner. Garry and his wife both grew up around boats. They decided on a Valiant 40 Yellow Rose to sail around the world.

Fito Espinoza
A native of Tijuana, Fito has 24 years of experience as a marina manager in Ensenada’s Marina Coral, a favorite destination for boaters making their first stop in Mexico. Making sure everybody has the correct paperwork to clear in to the country is an obligation he takes seriously. Recently, Fito collaborated with the Mexico Tourism Board to promote Mexico’s nautical destinations.

Paul Exner
Paul is a master sailor, sailing coach and consultant, and mentor to adventure seekers. Paul has sailed actively with attention to detail, and awareness about seamanship for over four decades! He’s an international-level expedition leader, boat builder, refit expert, curriculum creator, and is the rare sailor who has the tenacity, knowledge and organizational experience to prepare his clients to sail voyages aboard their own boat self-sufficiently, as they venture beyond the deep-water horizon.

Robert & Virginia Gleser
Virginia and Robert have just completed their 19th year of cruising their Islander Freeport 40 ketch, “Harmony,” from San Francisco to Mexico and beyond to Latin American and Ecuador. They have been married for 48 years and have raised eight children. When their last child went off to college in 2000, they sold their business and headed out the Golden Gate and turned left to cruise in warm climes. Virginia has authored the book entitled “Harmony on the High Seas, When Your Mate Becomes Your Matey,” which has earned rave reviews from the cruising community.

Mike Gunning
Mike is the part owner and director of sales for Electric Yacht. Electric Yacht and Mike have actively converted over 500 sail and power boats to electric propulsion over the last eight years.

Wendy Hinman
Wendy Hinman grew up sailing and has been sailing for more than 40 years. She taught sailing in the Chesapeake Bay and has cruised and raced in venues around the globe in all sorts of boats as skipper and crew, sometimes winning. She spent seven years at sea, sailing 34,000 miles aboard her 31 foot cutter, Velella, with her husband and enjoyed it so much, she never wanted to stop voyaging. She did return, still married and innocent of plotting murder or divorce. You can read about her adventures in Tightwads on the Loose, which has earned rave reviews and won awards. Her second book, Sea Trials, details the story of the Wilcox family’s determined quest to circumnavigate despite being shipwrecked. Leigh Hunt
Leigh is the CEO of Modern Sailing School and Club. Modern has been running an active Global Destinations program since 1998 and has lead flotillas in many of the most beautiful sailing destinations in the world. With flotilla group charters in the Caribbean Windward Islands, Croatia, Tahiti and Greece in the last four years, Leigh can share the highlights of his experiences and help you plan for your next destination sail!

Ken is a retired emergency medical technician/fire chief with extensive rescue experience in both rural and urban settings.

Dan Leininger
Capt. Leininger is the Northern California Regional Manager for Training Resources Maritime Institute. He is a retired naval officer and currently holds a Master 100GT Near Coastal license. Dan runs an office in Alameda, CA, where he provides U.S. Coast Guard licensing instruction and testing. Dan has held several positions on the San Francisco waterfront, including harbormaster and director of sailing programs. Dan is the executive director of America True and a board member at the Alameda Community Sailing Center.

Kira Maixner
Kira has her OUPV Captains License. She is a sailing instructor at Modern Sailing School and Club and crew on USA 76. Alongside her captaining career, she is also the owner and chief consultant of her own, small marketing agency where she works with small businesses in the outdoors and marine industries.

Richard Markie
Dick started cruising Mexico in 1990. After selling his business and leaving California, he spent several years cruising all of the Mexican coast. He opened and ran Marina Mazatlan for many years, before moving to Nuevo Vallarta, where he was charged with designing and managing the best marina in Mexico, called Paradise Village Marina.

Pat & Carole McIntosh
Pat and Carole have had many sailboats and power boats. They have almost 50 years of experience in power boats and sailboats, accumulating many years of lake sailing, trailer sailing, chartering, coastal cruising, and blue water sailing—all while raising four kids. They’ve dealt with the anxiety of your first time being in deep water, trailering a boat hundreds of miles to sail in an unknown area, being out of sight of land, or being on the line for your first race. The McIntoshes began boating in Folsom Lake near Sacramento in the late 1960s, expanded to the delta and the bay, have chartered in the Pacific Northwest, Belize and Panama, and have spent many years cruising Mexico and beyond, including some “blue water” cruising in the Pacific. Their cruising seminars and books have helped cruisers “cut the lines” since 2009. They have co-authored two books: “CRUISING NOTES -Things to know before you go” and “CRUISING NOTES – Underway to Mexico”.

Michael Moradzadeh
Twelve-time Pacific crosser, Pacific Cup commodore, and Transpac winner Michael Moradzadeh is joined by a team of experienced racers and cruisers to map out your strategy for a successful passage.

Zack Smith

Zack is an internationally recognized expert in the design and use of para-anchors and storm drogues. He is currently working with several companies including: The Ocean Clean Up, the U.S. Navy, and several military contractors to develop safer-to-use parachute sea anchor systems. Zack has been the head of research for Fiorentino Para-Anchor since 1995.

Ross Tennant
Ross is the owner of NW Explorations, which specializes in preparing and delivering guided excursions on the PNW. NWE developed the Mother Goose concept of leader-led flotillas that have inspired many people to venture beyond the well-traveled destinations to some areas further afield—and to do it safely. Ross and his family grew up boating on Vancouver Island. He is proud to run an organization with a reputation for delivering outstanding experiences to guests all over the world.

Thomas Trimmer
Tom is the founder and owner of Custom Marine Products, a company specializing in marine solar systems for the cruising sailor. Tom has been a cruising sailor for more than 20 years and understands that the number one challenge to comfortable cruising is the availability of electrical power. His company has helped many sailors analyze their power requirements, evaluate solar products available and design systems to meet their needs. A graduate mechanical/electrical engineer from the University of Michigan, Tom has been involved in the marine industry for over 20 years. He and his wife cruise the Great Lakes for six weeks each summer, testing and evaluating solar equipment (somebody has to do it!).

Christine Weaver
Christine is a California native. She grew up around San Francisco Bay, graduated from San Francisco State University, and learned to sail in El Toros at age 12. She has been actively racing and cruising since 1992, shortly after joining the staff of Latitude 38. She is now the editor of Racing Sheet and other racing-related features in the Latitude 38 magazine. She also writes the racing reports in ‘Lectronic Latitude. When not racing, she continues to be out and about as an avid cruiser. Christine co-founded the Delta Doo Dah cruising rally in 2009. With all her other duties, she still acts as the Delta Doo Dah rally organizer, helping to expand the cruising horizons for untold numbers of sailors.

April & Bruce Winship
Bruce and April set sail with their young daughters on an adventure of a lifetime aboard their 33-foot catamaran Chewbacca. Their exploration spanned 10 years and covered the waters of Mexico, and Central and South America. They are the authors of “Set Sail and Live Your Dreams” (Seaworthy Publications 2019), and their articles about the cruising lifestyle and their sailing adventures have been featured in many publications.
